Biography
Diego Serrano is a Spanish contemporary painter with roots in Barcelona and Lleida. With a background in design from the Ondara School of Art, Serrano's education in oil painting is predominantly self-taught, enriched by his design degree which included artistic disciplines like drawing, painting and sculpting from real life models. His art, centered in figurative painting, is an exploration of personal discovery and self-awareness, expressed through expressive brushstrokes that eschew hyperrealism in favor of evoking deeper emotional and introspective responses.
Inspired by the Old Masters such as Rembrandt or Fortuny and contemporary artists like Jenny Saville, Justin Mortimer or Hans Hartung, Serrano's work is characterized by a raw, yet refined quality that invites viewers to engage intimately with his pieces. He primarily works with oil on canvas or board.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Art, to me, is a journey into the self, a process of unraveling and understanding the complex layers that make up our identities and emotions. My work is always seeking to capture the essence of the human experience without being confined to the limits of hyperrealism. Instead, I prefer expressive brushstrokes that allow for a more profound connection and interpretation.
My figurative portraits serve as mirrors reflecting the viewer's own inner qualities. These representations are meant to symbolize the best within us all. The fixed gaze of the portraits challenges viewers to confront themselves, using the artwork as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth.
My art is for everyone. I reject the notion that great art belongs only in museums or galleries. In this digital age, art can and should be shared widely, breaking down the barriers that have traditionally limited its reach. Through my website, I strive to make my work accessible to a broader audience, inviting people from all walks of life to engage with and be moved by my paintings.
