Biography

diego serrano profile portrait

Diego Serrano is a Spanish contemporary painter with roots in Barcelona and Lleida, whose work deftly navigates the fine line between figuration and abstraction. With a background in design from the Escola d'Art Ondara, Serrano's education in painting is predominantly self-taught, enriched by his design studies. His art is an exploration of personal discovery and self-awareness, expressed through expressive brushstrokes that eschew hyperrealism in favor of evoking deeper emotional and introspective responses.

Inspired by the Old Masters such as Rembrandt or Fortuny and contemporary artists like Jenny Saville, Justin Mortimer or Hans Hartung, Serrano's work is characterized by a raw, yet refined quality that invites viewers to engage intimately with his pieces. He primarily works with oil on canvas or board and produces prints on canvas from his original works, blending traditional techniques with digital modifications to create unique pieces.

As an advocate for accessible art, Serrano has chosen to make his work available directly through his website. He believes in democratizing art, making it accessible to those with a moderate income who appreciate both the conceptual depth and aesthetic value of his creations.

Currently, Diego Serrano is focused on deepening his exploration of his two main collections: "MOOD" and "GODDESS". Through these collections, he aims to forge a stronger connection between emotional well-being and art, continuing his journey of self-discovery and inviting his audience to join him.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Art, to me, is a journey into the self, a process of unraveling and understanding the complex layers that make up our identities and emotions. My work oscillates between the figurative and the abstract, always seeking to capture the essence of the human experience without being confined to the limits of hyperrealism. Instead, I prefer expressive brushstrokes that allow for a more profound connection and interpretation.

My abstract collection, "MOOD", is an invitation to connect with specific emotions. These pieces are born from original works that are digitally transformed into prints, encouraging viewers to approach and delve into the painting, feeling the emotions it embodies. It is a dialogue between the artwork and the audience, where each piece serves as a conduit for introspection and emotional resonance.

In contrast, my figurative collection, "GODDESS", features portraits that serve as mirrors reflecting the viewer's own inner qualities. These representations of goddesses are not meant to depict any specific deity but rather to symbolize the best within us all. The fixed gaze of the portraits challenges viewers to confront themselves, using the artwork as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth.

My art is for everyone. I reject the notion that great art belongs only in museums or galleries. In this digital age, art can and should be shared widely, breaking down the barriers that have traditionally limited its reach. Through my website, I strive to make my work accessible to a broader audience, inviting people from all walks of life to engage with and be moved by my paintings.

As I continue to develop "MOOD" and "GODDESS", my goal is to further explore the intersection of emotional well-being and art. I am committed to creating pieces that not only captivate visually but also foster a deeper understanding and connection with our inner selves.
